This paper was presented at the 2019 IFAC Advances on Control Education Conference (IFAC-ACE), Philadelphia, PA, USA, July 7-9, 2019, and is in the conference proceedings. This paper aims to share with controls researchers ideas about how to interact with practicing control engineers, helping them upgrade the methods that they use.

The paper's audience is primarily controls researchers, who would do well to learn some of these practical issues in industrial control systems and how to avoid the pitfalls.  More importantly, this is a guide for how to communicate those fixes to practicing engineers in the field.
